Turtlehead Peak

...'Turtlehead Peak' is a pretty nice four mile "out and back" located in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. The route ascends some steep, rocky terrain for around 2,000ft to eventually summit the prominent 'Turtlehead Peak' (limestone) rock formation at around 6320ft elevation...

... 'Turtlehead Peak at dusk (viewing north) - the trail ascends the obvious drainage gully west of the peak to reach the 'saddle' (skyline), then traverses the 'saddle' east to reach the 'Turtlehead' and eventually the summit...

... buddy Matt viewing back to the south and Red Rock Canyon - contrasting red and tan sandstone rocks forming the 'Calico Hills' near with the 'Wilson Bluffs' to the west...

... viewing east toward the massive limestone walls of the 'Turtlehead' from high on the trail...

... starts to get a little steep...

... looking back from the 'wash' gully...

... plenty of desert vegetation...

... "critters" too if ya' take time to look - here's a 'Desert Tarantula'...

... "home-stretch" to the 'saddle'...

... and eventually there...

... 'La Madre Wilderness' to the north and west...

... the sloping summit of the 'Turtlehead' to the east...

... the true 'summit' with sweeping 360 degree 'panorama' - Las Vegas off to the east...

... desert wilderness to the south...

... 'La Madre Mountain' northwest...

... better view of the 'Calico Hills'...

... return view down the trail "gully" from atop the 'saddle' - couple other hikers lower right for scale...

... final shot of the 'Turtlehead' before headin' to the buffet at the 'Red Rock Casino'...
