Road & Track 1 (Drag Racing Part 2)

... those guys at 'Pittsburgh Raceway Park' (PRP) know how to put on a show - 'Nostalgia Weekend' classic car show and drag racing - very well paced afternoon of fun - following are some "hot rods" ...never was fond of the term "Hi-Performance" or "Muscle Car"... "back in the day", if ya' pissed off some "old fart", or better yet, the "police" (had a few - "sorry officer"), or "cops" (had more than a few - "I wasn't doin' nuthin' man!!!"), or "fuzz" (ya' don't say nuthin' - just hand 'em a pack of 'Zig Zag' rolling papers when they ask to see your license - know a guy who did that once) -  either way, you were a "XX!! hot rodder!!" (OK - fixed it) ... by the way - don't know any of the guys/gals who built these machines - salute them all - sorry we don't have room for everyone... also not going to pretend that we know what we're lookin' at all the time...

... like this 'Street Rod' (30's Ford?)...

...  50's Studebaker - great 'primer'd' paint job - all race cars should "look as such"...

... 60's Plymouth (Fury?)...

... w/ "blown" Hemi(?)... maybe...

... this is an easy one -  Pontiac GTO - 6 cylinder - (10/06 - I know it's not - was actually makin' fun of myself - man, right over the head of some!!)...

... now we're talkin' (prejudiced Chevy guys here) - '55 thru '57 - somewhere in there...

... '55(?) Chevy...

... now we're really talkin' - '70(?) Nova SS - owned two of 'em ('70 396 screamer and '73 350 sled - see '400 Horsepower Nostalgia')...

... another street rod - just back from a 'time trial run'...

... rear engine 'rail dragster' and some "rubber"...

... Chevy Camaro SS - guess'n '69...

... another 'rail dragster'... engine (??)...

... 50's Chevy 'Bel Air' wagon -  very cool, but not crazy about the "low profile pimp tires"...

... '40's 'Willys' (?)...

... Whoa!! - '65 - '67 Chevy Chevelle SS - 396...

... sayin' '57 Chevy - beautiful paint...

... '30's - '40's Roadster (??) - very cool...

... and another....

... best of the best - gorgeous '40's - '50's(?) Chevy Pick-up...

... with (apparent) high-rise/dual quad intake!!... small block??...

... gonna' end it here for now (keep it short)... been out of this stuff for over thirty years... visited the track last year with slightly ailing (at the time) 'buddy Matt' and was "pleasantly surprised" - never expected to see nuthin's changed!...

Turtlehead Peak

...'Turtlehead Peak' is a pretty nice four mile "out and back" located in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. The route ascends some steep, rocky terrain for around 2,000ft to eventually summit the prominent 'Turtlehead Peak' (limestone) rock formation at around 6320ft elevation...

... 'Turtlehead Peak at dusk (viewing north) - the trail ascends the obvious drainage gully west of the peak to reach the 'saddle' (skyline), then traverses the 'saddle' east to reach the 'Turtlehead' and eventually the summit...

... buddy Matt viewing back to the south and Red Rock Canyon - contrasting red and tan sandstone rocks forming the 'Calico Hills' near with the 'Wilson Bluffs' to the west...

... viewing east toward the massive limestone walls of the 'Turtlehead' from high on the trail...

... starts to get a little steep...

... looking back from the 'wash' gully...

... plenty of desert vegetation...

... "critters" too if ya' take time to look - here's a 'Desert Tarantula'...

... "home-stretch" to the 'saddle'...

... and eventually there...

... 'La Madre Wilderness' to the north and west...

... the sloping summit of the 'Turtlehead' to the east...

... the true 'summit' with sweeping 360 degree 'panorama' - Las Vegas off to the east...

... desert wilderness to the south...

... 'La Madre Mountain' northwest...

... better view of the 'Calico Hills'...

... return view down the trail "gully" from atop the 'saddle' - couple other hikers lower right for scale...

... final shot of the 'Turtlehead' before headin' to the buffet at the 'Red Rock Casino'...

DRAG RACING!! (Part 1)

Foleys Wall (Rock Climbing Part 4)

... small (areawise) but sweet - maybe 40ft to 50ft tall - maybe not - probably a dozen routes - all can be done on gear - "positive" textbook holds... great practice (if you own a real "rack"- a half-dozen 'quickdraws' ain't gonna' get ya' too far)...

... old B/W negative prints from "days gone by"... 'Goodman' climbing above... nothing really difficult (mostly moderate) - but steep - "tons of fun"...

... good place to "get your head together" for "bigger stuff"...

... a young 'buddy Matt'...

"buffed"...

... if it wasn't for the large horizontal ledge about a quarter way up the wall (below this guy), would give the place ten stars for "excitement"... so... only six... maybe seven at best...

... some effort was exerted "rigging" the place over the years - top rope & rap anchors - as well as "gardening" and trail building (many times over)... 'buddy Matt' above...

... hey - right across the "valley" on the next rise over to the west is a small crag - has a pretty cool traverse... if over there and facing "wall left" ...traverse the lower horizontal crack (face climbing with decent gear) to the right... maybe 50ft to the end... climb 10ft to 15ft to rig a "hanging belay" below the small roof... switch leads and traverse the roof back left - again, maybe 50ft...all the way protecting the upper horizontal crack below the roof ...to exit (step off) on to a small shelf... not bad... 'Goodman' (above) on the lower traverse... walls maybe 40ft tall...

... if headin' up there, please respect the land - is private as well as PA Gamelands...
