Ground Pines (aka: Tools Old and New - Part 3)

... additionally known as Ground Cedar, Cedar Ferns, Creeping Cedar, Clubmoss etc...

... pretty common hereabouts - usually found along the low end of drainages and draws...

... while "out and about" the other day stumbled across this area that was carpeted with 'em - they need a specific soil fungi to grow and subsequently (we understand) are impossible to cultivate - so the only place to see 'em is "in the wild"...

... not actually a pine or cedar but a fern - named for their resemblance to either of the two in miniature  (a maple and oak leaf for scale)...

(internet image)
... however, it's ancient relative is the 'Lepidodendron' which existed around here close to 410 million years ago and is said to have topped out at a height of nearly 130 feet at 6 feet in diameter (see 'Lepidodendron and Sigillaria', 05/14)...

... close up of their evergreen leaves...

... the plants grow these club-like looking 'strobili' (hence the term "clubmoss") that produce spores that are highly combustible when ignited as an aerosol...

... so what's this got to do with a !!**!! tool!?...

(internet image)
... well, when manufactured, 'Lycopodium Powder' was used to create the flash on those old-time photographic flash bars that ya'd see recreated in period movies (and that the 'Three Stooges' would always wind up blowing themselves up with) as well as theatrics like magic shows...

Casparis Crater

... was watchin' the latest film version of H.G. Wells 'War of the Worlds' on TV recently...

(internet image)
... this time around the storyline is that the Martians had been sent to earth eons ago and since then had existed in a dormant state underground, eventually emerging en-masse in their giant death beam Tripods with intent to capture the earth and all it's resources - including us!!...

(internet image)
... sort of like 17 year 'Periodical Cicadas' - but with a lot more carnage (unless ya' have some fun and toss one on a girly girl - or guy - then ya'd think there's not much difference)... by the way... they're due to return next  Spring (2016) - great bait for 'Bass' fishing...

... reminded us of a place we hadn't thought of in "many moons"...

... the "Casparis Crater"...

... tale is that long ago a 'UFO' crash landed at this location - the force of the impact burying it deep beneath the earth - the overlying ground caved in over it, leaving only this large surface impact crater and pond - the pond is fed from underground and always holds clear, fresh water...

... and where it remains to this day... checked it out recently, hadn't been here in years - looks like someone (or something) has created a foot path into (and out of) the crater since we been here last...??...

... back in the day it was a great excuse to take girls after dark to "check out the UFO crash site"... pretty eerie place during a crisp, late fall evening with full moonlight reflecting off the pond and moonbeams casting long shadows throughout the open forest... was always way too much fun to dispute this tale - the gals eventually always wanted to "hang pretty tight"...

(internet image)
... anyway, considering his many predictions to date, who's to say HG's vision of the future is not as as far fetched as we think...

(internet image)
... additionally... who knows where these guys are originally from?...

If This Was Anymore Fun (MTB Part 15)

... it would be illegal...

... after a pretty good ride last Saturday during which we found some cool single-track downhill winding from the ridge top, and which we weren't  previously aware of, the plan was to go out again on Sunday... unfortunately, 'brother Howie' was headin' out of town for the week, so it looked like a solo flight...

... got to thinkin'... hey!... hadn't seen this guy for a while...

... decided to conjure up 'Ghostrider'!...

... a few of the right chants and... Poof!!... and... whoa!!... added a bit too much hot 'Ghost Pepper' to the potion (but definitely will remember it for later, though)...

... got it right the second time - and what's this!? - he's straddlin' one of those new 'Fatbikes' - a 'Specialized Fatboy SE' to be exact - black on black, stock 26x4.6 'Ground Control' tires (60TPI, wire bead w/tubes), mechanical disc brakes, aluminum frame, alloy fork, 2x10 drivetrain > 11-36 cassette > 36/22 crank...  pretty nice... and he's amped to give it a go...

... thought a few times about pickin' one up myself, but "...where ya' gonna ride it? Those things are only made for sand and snow... you'll blow the tires ridin' on rocks!"  was the comment I'd always get from others... with that in consideration, we decided to give it an easy break in on a pretty tame "cruiser" route...

... after a few miles and up to this point that thing had been handlin' pretty well - including some steep rocky terrain which 'Ghostrider' (GR) cruised - those oversized tires really glided over the rocks while additionally providing excellent grip and "tracking" on the steep - in fact, crawling over large rocks seemed to be what that thing excelled at... the low gearing more than made up for the little bit of extra weight...

... it was a bit cold and frosty morning - the first thin coating of ice we'd seen this year on this water hole situated at higher elevation...

... definitely a whole new experience - that thing was a real rock crawler running those large low pressure tires - had 'em inflated to 10psi -  got to the point that was all he started lookin' for - ...

... decided to head into an area which we knew had a few sparsely scattered, larger low boulders...

... brilliant!...

... spent about a half hour doin' laps around this dry creek bed rolling over the boulders and droppin' the shallow banks for fun... almost like a rocky 'halfpipe'...

... had been out about two hours by now, so decided to head another two or three miles up to the local overlook before callin' it a day - there were usually a few decent mudholes on the way... had stopped to take a few photos on the way up when we heard somethin' big makin' it's way thru the brush and saw a large black coyote approaching, which got to within' thirty feet before he spotted us and stopped dead in his tracks - I was really rushin' to reset the camera setting for a photo or two - this single image was the best I could manage under the circumstances before he booked - he's pretty well camouflaged (inside the red circle)...

... a few preceding days of high winds had really open up the tree canopy...

... fat tracks and a size 11 for scale...

... the popular and often photographed 'Lookout Point'... that's an orienteering/adventure race control marker hangin' low on that tree limb - first time we ever encountered one in these parts - don't know who set it... a flock of those guys should be wary runnin' around this neck of "FayetteNam" while standing out in those flashy-lookin' racing duds (especially this close to Thanksgiving) - the "Hills Have Eyes"...

 "... Looky Pa!!... Turkeys!!!"...

"... I see's 'em boy!!!...

... anyway, all joking aside, it was soon time for 'GR' to return to his world, so we made our way back to the trailhead...

... been around ridin' MTB's since the first commercially available machines - first impression is that  'Fat Tire' bikes are a whole different way of experiencing the backwoods... in our opinion the manufacturers are actually doin' themselves a disservice - should be marketing those things as 'RockCrawlers'...

... true mountain bikes...

Tools - Old and New (Part 2)

... 16mm film editing bench... great for when access to a studio 'Flat Bed' editing system was miles away...

... home made table...

  1 - 16mm Rewinds
     2 - 16mm Split Reels
                                     3 - 16mm Film/Audio Tape Synchronizer
 4 - Audio Speaker
                     5 - Movieola 16mm film Viewer
             6 - 16mm Hot Film Splicer
                          7 - 16mm Film/Audio Tape Splicer

... 'Nagra 4.2' reel to reel audio tape recorder - picked this up years ago from a former 'NFL Films' cameraman who ran his own production company - he had upgraded some equipment and this was "payment" for some production work we assisted with - was more than satisfied... in film production film and audio is  recorded separately but in "real time" double system synchronization - that's the purpose of those "Hollywood Clapper Boards" you've seen forever; to facilitate "synchronization" of film and audio in later post production...

... here's a (bit dusty) vintage consumer 'Regular 8mm Film Editor' (an old '1969 Super Bowl' film short included) that's still in possession... amped by countless hours viewing 'American Sportsman' and the like, and together with a young buddy, we used to film small game hunts as kids using an old spring-wound 'Kodak Brownie 8' movie camera - did a pretty good job editing them on this thing into short two to three minute films... we each got to be as quick with a camera as with a shotgun trying to catch the action - would later record singe-track sound (gunshots, rustling scrub brush and ambient location) on to a tape recorder and played it in (poorly synced) audio film accompaniment for the "audience"... remember that we made a pretty good 'Pheasant Hunting' film with a few good "kill shots"... all that stuff is long gone now...

... the local fields of scrub brush used to be loaded with 'Ring Neck Pheasant' back then - if ya' didn't return home with at least two or three, ya' definitely went thru a box of 20 gauge shotgun shells - lots of fun...

(internet image)
... for some reason they (the wild pheasant) all disappeared from these parts during the 1970's...
